Japan defends against 'unacceptable' and 'false' criticism of Ghosn

The Japanese authorities soon responded to Carlos Ghosn's accusations during a press conference in Lebanon, in which he called Japan's legal system "inhuman" and said he fled a "political persecution" in Japan.

Speaking to the media in the early hours of Thursday morning, Justice Minister Masako Mori said the flight of former Nissan's president from Japan would be considered an unforgivable act in any country, Kyodo reported.

Mori accused Ghosn of propagating erroneous facts about Japan's legal system in an attempt to justify his escape.

The minister said that detainees in Japan can report the conditions of their detention and that a defendant may be reunited with his wife if there is no possibility of him destroying evidence, according to NHK.

According to the terms of his bail in Japan, Ghosn was prohibited from meeting in person with his wife, a restriction heavily criticized for his legal defense.

Finally, Mori stressed that in Japan defendants are guaranteed the right to a fair trial in court.

The Tokyo prosecutor's office also convicted Ghosn's criticism of Japan's criminal justice system, calling them "totally unacceptable."

"As he fled Japan, defendant Ghosn flagrantly disobeyed Japanese law to avoid the consequences of the crimes he committed."

With regard to the executive's version, which claims that there was a plot between Nissan and the prosecution against him, he stated that it was "categorically false". (International Press)
