A military confrontation in the Middle East that includes Iran would have an impact not only on the peace and stability of the region, but on the "whole world," Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe warned.
Abe was received in Saudi Arabia by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, AFP reports.
The Japanese leader urged all parties to make diplomatic efforts to calm tensions in the region.
On the other hand, Abe informed his partner of Japan's plan to send its Self-Defense Forces to the Middle East to collect information in order to ensure the safe transit of commercial ships.
The two leaders agreed to work closely on maritime security in the region.
Abe stressed the importance of continued and stable supply of oil by Saudi Arabia to Japan.
As part of a brief tour of the region, Abe will also visit the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
His journey was in doubt after tensions between the United States and Iran escalated following Iranian missile strikes on U.S. forces in Iraq in retaliation for the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. (International Press)
